A Colorful Wedding at the Virginia MOCA

Bold color, dramatic florals, a non-traditional venue, and a couple who knew exactly what they wanted and went for it completely. The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach was the backdrop, and it was such a natural fit that it almost felt like the building was waiting for this day.

RSG Weddings & Events had the honor of coordinating alongside one of the most talented groups of people we've had the pleasure of working with. And one more thing worth mentioning — this was one of the last weddings ever held at the original MOCA location before the museum relocated to its brand new home. This day was already special. That detail makes it a little legendary.

The Venue

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is not your average wedding venue — and that's the whole point. The clean architecture, bright white walls, and rotating contemporary artwork gave every colorful design element room to breathe and show off. Nothing competed. Everything popped.

The suspended glass installation above the ceremony aisle stopped people in their tracks. Color and movement hanging right above the aisle as guests watched the ceremony unfold below it — genuinely one of the coolest ceremony backdrops we've ever seen.

By the time guests moved into the reception, the space felt completely transformed. Long tables, modern lamps, bud vases, candles, and florals that could have been pulled straight from an editorial shoot. It was romantic without being fussy, and contemporary without feeling like a showroom. Exactly the balance this couple was after.

Favorite Design Moments

Honestly, where do we even begin?

The morning started at 7 AM in a Presidential Suite at the Oceanfront — four artists getting the full bridal party ready before everyone made their way to the museum. The first look happened outside at the Pink Dinghy, and it was the kind of quiet moment that makes the chaos of the rest of the day worth it.

Then the reception happened, and the whole evening just ran. The candlelight against the bold florals, the lounge areas giving guests somewhere to land between dances, the tablescapes that somehow held it all together without feeling like too much. Late-night French fries passed — always the right call. A private last dance for just the two of them while guests waited outside with cones of white flower petals for the grand exit.

We say this genuinely: this day was firing on all cylinders.

The Vendor Team

A wedding like this doesn't come together without an incredible group of people behind the scenes. Every vendor on this team brought something meaningful to the table, and we are so grateful for each of them.

Wedding Coordination | RSG Weddings & Events | @rsgweddings.events The RSG Events team arrived at 2:30PM and didn't stop moving until the last gift was loaded into the car at 11PM. From managing vendor arrivals and keeping the timeline on track to coordinating the grand entrance, the cake cutting, the private last dance, and the petal exit — every moving piece of this day was handled with intention.

Venue | Virginia MOCA | @virginiamoca The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art gave this wedding its entire personality. The architectural bones, the gallery walls, the suspended glass installation above the ceremony aisle — there was simply no other venue in Virginia Beach that could have done what this space did for this couple's vision. And as one of the final weddings held in the original MOCA location, it will always hold a special place in Virginia Beach wedding history.

Catering & Desserts | Chef by Design | @chefbydesign Chef by Design arrived at 2:30PM and handled everything from passed beer and wine during cocktail hour on the front patio to plated salads, dinner stations, and late night french fries that came out at 9:45PM to keep the dance floor fueled. Every transition from one course to the next was seamless.

Photography | Morgan Renee Photography | @morganreneephoto With two photographers on site — one capturing the bridal suite at the Oceanfront and one covering the groom's preparation — not a single moment of this day went undocumented. From the first look at the Pink Dinghy to the white petal grand exit, Morgan Renee Photography captured every layered detail and emotional beat with a beautifully editorial eye.

Videography | Whitecaps Film | @whitecapsfilm Whitecaps Film arrived at 3PM and stayed through the very last dance, documenting the full day from cocktail hour through the grand exit. The result is a film that will let this couple relive every moment for years to come.

Content Creation | HoneyDo Socials | @honeydosocials Honeydo Socials was on site creating content specifically for the couple's social platforms — because details this good deserve to live everywhere. Having a dedicated content creator separate from the photography and videography team means nothing slips through the cracks.

Hair & Makeup | Allured Artistry | @alluredbyashley | @elisha_alluredartistry | @mykalah_alluredartistry | @trin_alluredartistry The Allured by Ashley team showed up at 6:45AM and had the entire bridal party camera-ready by 2PM. Four artists working in a Presidential Suite at the Oceanfront — the energy in that room must have been everything. The bridal party looked absolutely flawless from first look all the way through the last dance.

Entertainment | EE Special Events | @eespecialevents | @ezraonsax | @sseyboldmusic | @cswain252 Special Events brought the energy — and then some. The combination of DJ and live saxophone created a reception atmosphere that kept guests on the dance floor from the grand entrance straight through to last call at 10:30PM. When the music is this good, no one wants to leave.

Coffee Bar | Mello Beans | @mellobeans Mello Beans arrived at 2:30PM with the catering team and set up a specialty coffee bar, giving guests a little something extra to sip on throughout the evening. A thoughtful touch that guests always remember.

Florist | Kate Fiore Floral | @katefiorefloral Kate Fiore Floral created the dramatic, colorful floral design that was truly the heartbeat of this wedding's aesthetic. From the ceremony installations to the long reception tablescapes overflowing with bold blooms, every arrangement was stunning — vibrant and lush without ever feeling chaotic.

Wedding Dress | Studio I Do Bridals | @studioidobridals Studio I Do Bridals dressed the bride in a gown that felt modern and timeless all at once — the perfect complement to the colorful, editorial aesthetic of the day.

Cake | Sugarcoat Studio | @sugarcoat_studio Sugarcoat Studio delivered a cake that looked just as good as it tasted. The cutting happened at 8:45PM — a sweet pause right before the party really kicked off.

Linens | Waterford Event Rentals | @waterfordeventrentals Waterford Event Rentals arrived at 2:30PM and transformed the reception tables with linens that anchored the entire tablescape design. The foundation that made everything else look as good as it did.

Tablescape, Chairs & Lounge | Curated Events Chesapeake | @curatedeventschesapeake Curated Events Chesapeake dropped rentals at the MOCA in the late morning and set the stage for the entire reception aesthetic — the lounge areas, the chairs, the layered tablescape pieces that gave the space its editorial, fashion forward feel.

Photo Booth | Snapqube | @snapqubephotobooths Snapqube Photo Booths set up between 3 and 4PM and had an attendant on site by 6:30 PM for cocktail hour. Always a crowd favorite — and always one of the most fun things to scroll through the morning after.

Bridal Bronze | Rey Collective | @rey.collective Rey Collective made sure the bride was glowing from every angle, all day long.

Final Thoughts

This was a bold, fearless, genuinely fun wedding — and it happened to be one of the last ever held in the original Virginia MOCA. That alone makes it worth remembering. But it's the couple's vision and the team around them that will really stick with us.

If you're dreaming of something that feels nothing like a typical wedding, RSG Weddings & Events would love to be part of making that happen.
